Minister says defense spending below 1.5% of GDP in Belarus

MINSK, Feb 17 (Prime-Tass) -- Belarus’ state budget defense spending was below 1.5% of GDP in 2004, less than in any other CIS country, Defense Minister, Colonel General Leonid Maltsev told a news conference Thursday.

The minister believes the attempts to accuse Belarus of militarization have no grounds. “Belarus is the least militarized country in the CIS, where defense spending stands at about 2% of GDP,” Maltsev said.

In 2005 defense spending is projected at 539.6 billion Belarusian rubles. In January-November 2004 defense spending amounted to 404 billion Belarusian rubles, or 94% of the target.

The minister also reported about the military reform carried out in the armed forces in 2001-2004.

“One of the tasks of the reform was to bring the army in conformity with the economic potential of the country, which has been successfully done,” Maltsev said. End
