Minsk Automobile Plant READY TO DOUBLE CITY BUS OUTPUT IN 2005

(on the information from Interfax)

Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) is ready to produce twice the amount of city buses planned for 2005.

This year the plant is to manufacture 650 buses. If the demand proves to be greater, it is ready to double the target.

In 2004 MAZ turned out 607 buses, 26.2% up on the year.

The expected increase of the demand will be prompted by the necessity to renew the city public transport park. The annual renewal target has been set at 10%. In particular, Minsktrans alone is bound to buy 164 buses in 2005.

Meanwhile, local administrations and transport agencies have not adjusted their bus-purchasing plans for 2005 or placed them with the plant yet, which experts fear, can cause a number of problems linked with the changes in the production targets of the plant. They explained, MAZ is oriented for outside orders (Russia, Ukraine and Eastern European countries), while the share of domestic sales stands at 12%.

Last year MAZ won a tender to supply commuter buses to Romania’s Constantsa.

The company informed, starting January 1 2005, all MAZ trucks and buses are fitted with Mercedes engines that meet EURO-2 and EURO-3 ecological standards.

MAZ buses for international transportation are equipped with MAN engines. As far as commuter bus series are concerned, MAZ is planning to build up production of medium capacity buses (26-28 seats).

MAZ manufactures buses for international transportation only if there are order. A tentative price is EUR 200,000 for a bus.

Minsk Automobile Plant, the largest producer of prime movers in the former Soviet Union, manufactures over 150 models and modifications of vehicles (platform and hauling trucks, road trains, quarry and road dump-trucks, timber lorries, chassis for truck-mounted cranes, concrete mixers, etc.) along with trailing units, buses, and consumer goods.

MAZ is a patron enterprise for BelavtoMAZ (which also includes Mogilev’s MoAZ), a scattering of small enterprises in Osipovichi, Mogilev and Zhodino.

MAZ produces trucks with a 4õ2, 4õ4, 6õ4, 6õ6 wheel formula.

The company buys over 60% (in value terms) of components in Russia, purchasing the rest in Ukraine and non-CIS countries.

Lukashenko wants MMZ to launch high-power diesel engine production

MINSK, Feb 10 (Prime-Tass) -- Belarus’ only diesel engine manufacturer state-owned Minsk Motor Plant (MMZ) should produce the whole range of diesel engines below 400 hp and start producing more powerful engines jointly with leading foreign companies. President Alexander Lukashenko set MMZ this task late Wednesday following his visit to the plant, the press service of the head of state said.

“We may produce only components today, but tomorrow we will start making high-power diesel engines ourselves,” Lukashenko said.

Starting 2006 agro companies alone will need 6,000 high-power diesel engines every year, Lukashenko said, quote by his press service.

The president is certain Belarus should cut engine imports. “Belarus produces tractors, grain harvesters and fodder choppers, and we cannot depend so much on imports,” the press service said, quoting Alexander Lukashenko.

MMZ development program will require about U.S. $70 million, General Director of the plant Nikolai Lobach told the president.

Lukashenko instructed to start batch production of 300 hp diesel engines for tractors and 350 hp engines for trucks starting 2006.
