LIGHT AND TEXTILE INDUSTRY

 

The light industry of Belarus includes over 1,390 enterprises and production facilities with 168,000 personnel. The main types of products include textile, knitted and sown items, and leather footwear. In 1990 the products manufactured by the light industry enterprises constituted 17.2% of the total industrial output of the country.

In the following years, as a result of the deepened crisis, the output of the light industry was sharply reduced and 1995 it constituted only 46.6% as compared to the level of 1990, whereas the share of the light industry in the total industrial output went down to 8%.

After 1995, production output began to increase and the output went up 1.7 times in the 3 years that followed. The highest growth rates were recorded in the sector of manufacture of silk (2.2 times) and cotton (2 times) fabrics, carpets and carpet items (1.9 times), knitted and hosiery products (1.5 times). The share of the light industry in the total production output increased to 9.2% in 2000.

At present, the production facilities of the Belarusian light industry are oriented towards output of flax fibers; washed wool; cotton, flax, wool, volume, and staple yearn; cotton, flax, wool and silk fabrics; carpets and carpet items; textile haberdashery; knitted and hosiery products; sewing industry products; leather goods and leather haberdashery items; furs and fur items; leather footwear; etc.

The scientific and technical level of the light industry of the Republic is sufficiently high. A significant share of the industry is competitive on the world market, including the EU markets. In 2000 to foreign countries, except CIS countries, were supplied over 50 % of the total output of sewn items, 35% of flax fabrics, 30% of wool fabrics and 10% of cotton fabrics.
