The chemical and petrochemical industry is one of the largest industries of the industrial complex. After a temporary decline in production, since 1995 the industry has acquired a stable growth, which constituted 107.2% in 1996, 119.4% in 1997 and 106% in 1998, 107% in 1999 and 101% in 2000.

The sectoral structure of the chemical and petrochemical industry is diversified.

The leading place as regards the number of employees and the production output belongs to the chemical fibers and threads industry, the mining and chemical industry (production of potassium fertilizers), the basic chemistry and the petrochemical industry. Enterprises of these industries as well as enterprises manufacturing products from synthetic resins and plastics constitute Belneftekhim Chemical Concern and produce 92.6% of the total volume of products in this sector, thus being the main exporters of chemical products.

The petrochemical complex consists of 83 enterprises and factories. The total number of their employees is 120,000 people. The share of the Concern's enterprises in the total volume of Belarusian industrial output exceeds 15 per cent and their share in the republic's export is over 25 per cent, with the share in the export to foreign countries except CIS being more than 45%. The annual foreign trade turnover of the Concern constitutes over 3 billion US dollars, with the export being 1.5 billion US dollars.

Oil sector. Belarus is not included into leading oil-producing countries, however, part of domestic market demands is met at the expense of the country's proper crude oil resources. Belorusneft Amalgamation, which is part of the Concern, extracts 1.8 million tons of oil a year. The Concern has 2 oil transportation enterprises, which pump 73 million tons of Russian oil to European countries, as well as 2 oil refineries.

Oil refineries are capable of refining up to 40 million tons of crude oil per year and produce automobile petrol, diesel fuel, aromatic hydrocarbons, fuel for jet air-planes, lubricants, etc.

Thirty-seven enterprises providing oil products and 320 petrol stations determine the leading stand of the Concern on the market of automobile fuel in the Republic of Belarus.
