THE FUEL AND ENERGY COMPLEX

The share of the fuel and energy complex (FEC) includes 25.6% of all capital investments into the industry, almost one-fifth of the fixed production assets, and 13.8% of the gross product.

The core of the FEC is the energy generation sector, which provides for the needs of the national economy through the united energy system. The production potential of the Belarusian energy system is represented by 22 large thermal power-generation stations with the total power of 7.3 million kW, 25 regional boiler-houses with the output of 7,500 Gcal/h, 7,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and over 2 thousand km of heat networks. The electricity-generating stations of the system generated in 2000 about 26.1 billion kW*h, which constituted about 75% of the country's needs.

More than half of the Belarusian power stations are heat-and-power generating stations, which fact conditions specific expenditures for generation of electrical and heat energy (272 g/kW*h and 173 kg/Gcal) which corresponds to the best world indicators. Natural gas constitutes 70% of the fuel consumed by the Belarusian energy system.

Electrical networks are updated and reconstructed through introduction of progressive technical solutions and devices. The energy system has introduced a hierarchical multi-level automated system of supervisory control on the basis of new computer systems; operational information control complexes have been set up, which has made it possible to attain a high level of equipment of electricity transmission lines and equipment of the main network with modern relay protection devices and trouble-free control relays.

The fuel industry of Belarus is represented by enterprises extracting and processing oil and peat, among which the dominant positions are taken by large oil refineries.

The system of Beltopgaz Concern includes 42 peat-extracting and peat-processing enterprises employing about 11,000 people. They extract annually 3 million tons of peat, including 2.8 million tons used for manufacture of peat briquettes and 0.2 million tons used for manufacture of peat nutrient mixtures for domestic market and for export.
